One of the quickest ways to break into the health care industry is to become a medical assistant. And in the medical field, few positions offer the versatility a medical assistant provides, keeping open a variety of career paths that aren’t as readily available for others in the health profession.
Education is, as with most things, is the entryway to becoming a medical assistant. From a one year certification course offered by some schools to a two-year associate’s degree at an accredited school, aspiring medical assistants will undertake coursework in medical terminology, math and science, and first aid. But as with many industries in today’s work climate, a medical assistant’s job description has become increasingly more all-encompassing, to assimilate administrative tasks as well as clinical ones, such as medical record-keeping and aiding in some medical billing and coding.
A medical assistant may master all of the aforementioned skills but it may be all for naught if for one missing intangible: compassion. It’s usually the medical assistant who interacts the most with patients, many times acting as liaison between the medical staff and the patients. So being the first contact for a patient can make for a very rewarding career. A jack of all trades type of work ethic, performing clinical and administrative duties, while providing customer service in the form of a doctor’s bedside manner, is what will epitomize the ideal medical assistant, and also what characterizes the following blogs that have been awarded for being the most reflective of these values and practices.
